Hire a relocation company when your employer pays, when you move with children, when the start date is tight or when the visa case is complex; do it yourself when you are a solo EU/EEA mover with a flexible timeline. The official costs of a DIY move are small by comparison: a first highly skilled migrant permit costs €423 at the IND in 2026 (ind.nl, checked 28 September 2026), and EU/EEA citizens need no residence permit at all (IND), although they register with their municipality if they stay longer than four months. Relocation companies in the Netherlands do not publish a common price list, so ask two or three for an itemised written quote; for many self-funded movers, paying only for the housing search is the middle route.

Quick answer: A relocation company is usually worth considering when your employer pays, you are moving with a family, you have a tight start date, or your visa case is complex. A DIY move works well for solo movers, EU/EEA passport holders and anyone with a flexible timeline. For many self-funded expats, the middle route is paying only for the housing search. Relocation companies do not publish a common price list, so compare itemised written quotes.

What Does a Relocation Company Do in the Netherlands?

A relocation company in the Netherlands manages the human side of a move (permit, housing, registration, schools), while a moving company ships your belongings. The market runs from global relocation groups to small local agencies. One verifiable signal is EuRA membership: Relocation Services Holland (RSH), for example, states on its own site that it belongs to EuRA and that it achieved the EuRA Global Quality Seal in 2009, with its latest recertification listed in 2022 (checked 4 October 2026).

A service package can include some or all of the following:

Immigration and visa support. Preparing your IND application, the MVV entry visa if you need one, and the residence permit appointment after arrival, in cooperation with your employer if it is a recognised sponsor. See the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) for the official requirements. For cases with a non-EU partner or dependent children, this support can save you work.

Home search. Shortlisting and touring rental properties on your behalf, and support with the contract negotiation, the deposit and the rental agreement (huurovereenkomst).

BSN and municipal registration. Booking your registration appointment at the gemeente and helping you bring the right documents. The official government guide explains the steps.

School search. Identifying international schools, bilingual options and Dutch schools, and helping with applications and waiting lists.

Settling-in services. Time on the ground showing you your neighbourhood: shops, GP registration, public transport and the practical basics.

Departure services. If you later leave the country, some companies also handle deregistration, utility cancellations and the end of your tenancy.

Packages differ per company, so check in writing which of these are included.

What is usually not included

These items are often assumed to be covered but frequently are not. Check the scope in writing:

  • Furniture and appliance purchasing. Some companies offer paid settling-in assistance for this, billed separately.
  • Pet relocation. Usually handled by a specialist pet mover, outside the package.
  • Driving licence exchange. The application goes through the RDW and your municipality; ask whether the company only explains it or also prepares it.
  • Tax filing. Usually referred to a tax adviser.
  • Translation of personal documents. Sworn translations by a beëdigd vertaler are usually billed separately.
  • Vehicle import. BPM exemption paperwork for a car you bring is a separate specialist service.

How Much Does a Relocation Company Cost Compared with DIY?

Relocation companies do not publish a common price list, and corporate clients negotiate their own contracts, so we do not publish package prices. Only an itemised written quote tells you what a specific package costs. Ask for every service line (immigration support, home search, school search, settling-in) to be priced separately, so you can compare providers and drop what you do not need.

Official and practical DIY costs

ItemCost
IND application fee (highly skilled migrant, first application)€423 (IND, 2026); EU/EEA citizens need no residence permit
Document translations and legalisationdepends on the documents; ask a sworn translator for a quote
Rental agent / makelaaronly if you hire one yourself; ask for the fee in advance
Temporary accommodationdepends on city and length of stay
Your timedepends on your situation

The largest DIY cost is often temporary accommodation while you search for a home, so budget for it before you compare DIY with a package.

When Is a Relocation Company Worth It?

A relocation company is usually worth considering in four situations: your employer pays, you move with a family, your start date is tight, or your visa case is complex. Outside those situations, many expats handle the steps themselves or pay only for the housing search.

1. Your employer is paying for it. If a relocation package is part of your offer, it saves you time without coming out of your own budget. Ask how it is treated for tax; see the FAQ above.

2. You are moving with a family. Two adults plus children multiply every administrative step, and school applications and waiting lists are hard to manage from abroad. See Dutch schools for expat children in 2026 for what the school search involves.

3. You have a tight start date. If you need to be on the ground soon and you are still abroad with no Dutch network, the housing search is usually the bottleneck. A company with local agent contacts can arrange viewings while you are still abroad.

4. Your visa case is complex. Non-EU spouse, dependent children, prior immigration history, or a switch from one residence permit type to another. Anything that does not fit the standard highly skilled migrant route benefits from someone who handles these applications regularly.

When Is a DIY Move to the Netherlands the Better Choice?

A DIY move works best for solo EU/EEA movers, who need no residence permit, and for anyone with a flexible timeline. It works less well with a tight start date, no Dutch network and a housing budget you have to find yourself.

1. Solo move, EU/EEA passport. No IND residence permit and no MVV. You register at the gemeente and receive your BSN. Paying for a full package to manage that is often more than you need.

2. Flexible timeline. If you can stay with a friend, sublet or use a mid-term rental at first, you can run the housing search at your own pace. See the housing market for expats guide.

3. You are comfortable with English-language paperwork. The IND, many municipalities and the Belastingdienst publish information in English, and a translation app helps with Dutch forms.

4. You enjoy logistics. Some people find planning a move energising. If you are one of them, a full package may take away the parts you would happily do yourself.

The Hybrid Approach: DIY Most Things, Pay for One Bottleneck

House-hunt-only packages typically include:

  • An intake call to define neighbourhoods, budget and must-haves
  • A number of viewings (in person or video)
  • Contract review and negotiation
  • Key handover and inventory walkthrough

Pricing depends on city and complexity; ask whether home search is available as a standalone service and for its price as a separate line in the quote.

The other tasks — BSN, bank account, health insurance, DigiD, huurtoeslag — you handle yourself with the guides in this resource hub. Specifically:

If you want an NL IBAN early, bunq lets you open an account before your BSN arrives and add your tax ID within 90 days of signup; bunq’s help centre says you need to be 18 or older and live in a supported EEA country, and accounts opened in the Netherlands get an NL IBAN.

How Do You Vet a Relocation Company?

Anyone can call themselves a relocation consultant, so check EuRA membership, ask for an itemised written quote and call references with a profile like yours before you sign.

1. EuRA membership and the EGQS+ seal. The European Relocation Association has a public member search on its website, and it offers the EuRA Global Quality Seal Plus, which it describes as an external audit based on an ISO 9001 process management model (eura-relocation.com, checked 4 October 2026). Ask a company for its current certificate; if it does not hold the seal, check references more carefully.

2. Written, itemised quote. Ask for every service line to be priced individually. If a provider will only quote a single number, you cannot compare or negotiate what is inside it.

3. References with a similar profile. Ask for references from recent clients like you (single or family, EU or non-EU, your destination city), and ask them what went wrong and how the company handled it.

4. Contract clarity on scope and overruns. Read what counts as one “viewing.” Is a video tour a viewing? If a property falls through after you apply, does the next viewing cost extra? What happens if your visa is delayed and the package runs past the agreed window?

5. A named consultant in your destination city. Ask who will actually handle your case locally and how much experience they have there.

6. Complaints procedure. EuRA says its members agree to its Rules of Conduct each year, and lists an arbitration body among its objectives. Ask any company, member or not, to set out its complaints procedure in writing.

Quick Reality Check on Insurance and Healthcare

Check whether your cover has a gap between leaving your home country and starting Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering). When you live or work in the Netherlands, Dutch basic health insurance is generally mandatory; see our Dutch health insurance guide for when the obligation starts. For travel before that point, SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance offers travel medical insurance (including cover for new, unexpected issues while travelling, per its own site); check the current price and terms on SafetyWing’s site. It does not replace Dutch basic insurance once you are required to have it.

If you have a corporate package on the table, take it. If you are self-funding, compare a housing-search-only quote with doing everything yourself. If you are an EU citizen moving alone with a flexible timeline, doing it yourself is often enough.

What you should not do is go without a plan. Whether you go with a relocation company, or with a planning tool such as verhuisplanner.app (built by the same publisher), decide early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you recommend the top relocation companies in the Netherlands?

We do not rank relocation companies on our own experience. Two checks you can do yourself: whether the company is a member of EuRA (the European Relocation Association), and whether it holds the audited EuRA Global Quality Seal. Relocation Services Holland (RSH), for example, states on its own site that it belongs to EuRA and that it achieved the EuRA Global Quality Seal in 2009, with its latest recertification listed in 2022 (checked 4 October 2026). Ask any shortlisted company for client references with a profile like yours.

What does a relocation service for employees cost in the Netherlands?

There is no published market rate: relocation companies price per package or per service line, and corporate clients negotiate their own contracts. Ask for a written quote with every service (immigration support, home search, school search, settling-in) priced separately, so you can compare providers and drop what you do not need. The official fees are small by comparison, such as €423 for a first highly skilled migrant permit in 2026 (IND, checked 28 September 2026).

How much does a full-service relocation company to the Netherlands cost in 2026?

Relocation companies do not publish a common price list, and corporate clients negotiate their own contracts, so there is no reliable market figure. The price depends on the services in the package (immigration support, home search, school search, settling-in) and the size of your household. Ask two or three companies for an itemised written quote on the same scope.

Can I do a Netherlands relocation entirely by myself without a company?

Many official steps can be handled directly, but the difficulty depends on immigration status, documents, municipality and housing. Compare a written relocation-service scope with the official fees and the tasks you can complete yourself; do not rely on a generic time or cost estimate.

Is EuRA membership a reliable quality signal for a relocation company?

EuRA, the European Relocation Association, offers the EuRA Global Quality Seal Plus, which it describes as an external audit based on an ISO 9001 process management model (eura-relocation.com, checked 4 October 2026). Membership does not guarantee a good experience, so treat it as one signal and also check references.

Will a relocation company find me a house in Amsterdam faster than I can?

It can help, because a relocation company can arrange viewings through local agents while you are still abroad. It cannot change the market: availability and your budget still decide what you find. Ask any company how many homes it has found in your target area recently and at what rents.

Should my employer pay for a relocation company, and is the benefit taxable?

Whether an employer-paid relocation package is tax-free depends on how it is classified. According to the Belastingdienst, an employer that applies the expat scheme (30% ruling) can also reimburse moving costs and the costs of temporary storage and transport of household goods tax-free under a targeted exemption. Ask your employer how the package is processed in payroll, and check with a Dutch tax adviser for your situation.

What is the most useful hybrid approach if I cannot afford a full package?

Pay only for the housing search. Ask relocation companies whether they offer home search as a separate service, and ask for its price, the number of viewings and whether contract review is included. Combine that with a DIY approach to visa, BSN, banking and insurance.
