This guide compares The Hague and Den Bosch on points you can check. We give no invented price ranges, travel times or job counts. Where there is no official figure, we say so and tell you what to compare yourself.

The Quick Verdict
The Hague is the larger city and the seat of Europol; Den Bosch is a mid-sized provincial capital. Which fits you depends on your job, your language and your budget. Compare the points below with your own situation before you choose.
City Profiles at a Glance
The Hague (Den Haag)
- Population: 568,192 at the start of August 2026 (CBS, municipality).
- Europol is headquartered in The Hague (europol.europa.eu, 8 October 2026).
- Coastal: the municipality includes Scheveningen and Kijkduin on the North Sea.
Den Bosch (’s-Hertogenbosch)

- The municipality has an international page for newcomers (s-hertogenbosch.nl, International).
The Hague has roughly 3.5 times as many residents as Den Bosch (568,192 divided by 162,848).
Cost of Living
Housing
Pararius reports the average rent that new tenants paid per square metre for free-sector homes in the second quarter of 2026: The Hague EUR 22.42 (up 5.9% on a year earlier), Amsterdam EUR 28.69, Rotterdam EUR 22.79, Utrecht EUR 21.61 and Eindhoven EUR 20.25 (Pararius Huurmonitor Q2 2026). Pararius did not publish a figure for Den Bosch in that report. Multiply the price per square metre by the floor area to estimate a monthly rent before service costs, and compare current listings in both cities.
Dean is a paid rental alert service for Dutch rentals; Dean says on its own site (heydean.nl/en) that it checks more than 1,000 rental sources against your search profile, with a 3-day free trial and prices from EUR 0.33 per day (heydean.nl/en, 7 October 2026). It does not rent you a home, so you still need to respond quickly with your documents ready.
We cover the Dutch housing search in our finding housing in the Netherlands guide. For finding a place faster, platforms such as HousingAnywhere list furnished rentals.
Daily Costs
We give no prices for coffee, dinner or transport passes because we have no official source. Compare current prices on the websites of the supermarkets and transport operators, and see our Dutch supermarkets guide. For the salary side, see our average salary in the Netherlands guide.
The Job Market
Europol is headquartered in The Hague (Europol). For other employers in either city, check current vacancies on the employers’ own sites and note the language requirements in each advert. Our how to find a job in the Netherlands as an expat guide covers the practical steps.
Housing Markets in Practice
Neighbourhood character and travel times depend on the exact address, so check them yourself: use the NS journey planner for the commute from a specific address, and read recent local news and the municipality’s own pages for each neighbourhood you consider. A relocation agent or a platform such as HousingAnywhere can help newcomers find a first home.
International Schools
Whether an international school is within reach is often decisive for families. Check each school’s own website for admission rules and waiting lists, and ask each municipality which schools serve your address. Our international schools in the Netherlands guide explains how to compare them.
Healthcare and English-Speaking Doctors
Health insurance works the same in both cities: take out Dutch basic insurance no later than 4 months after arriving, and the cover applies from the day of arrival (Government.nl). The average basic premium in 2026 is €157 per month (Rijksoverheid), with a compulsory deductible of €385 per year. The basic package is identical at every insurer, so compare premium, policy type and supplementary cover.
For finding a GP, see our find an English-speaking doctor in NL guide and navigate Dutch healthcare in English. Ask practices directly whether they take new patients and whether they offer English-language service.
Banking and Finance
The banking decision is the same in both cities. Our best banking for expats and Wise vs Revolut coverage applies equally.
Registration When You Arrive
If you will live in the Netherlands for at least four months, register with the municipality within five days of arriving (Gemeente ’s-Hertogenbosch). The municipality asks everyone moving with you to come to the appointment, and you bring your passport or ID, a residence permit if required, and birth, marriage or divorce certificates where relevant. If you come from outside the EU and have not yet applied for a residence permit, you cannot register yet.
Culture and Lifestyle
We do not rank culture. Visit both cities if you can, and check the municipalities’ and tourist offices’ own agendas for events. See our cycling in the Netherlands guide for the basics that apply in both cities.
Commuting
Check train times for your own route on the NS journey planner, because they depend on your station, the time of day and the service pattern. We do not quote travel times here.
Family Life
For families, check three things yourself: the schools available near your address, the childcare place you need, and the commute for both partners. For family-specific guidance, see our moving to NL with kids guide and expat family guide. We do not compare crime statistics here; the CBS publishes municipal crime figures.
Our Recommendation
We do not name a winner. Use this order: first, your workplace and the language it requires; second, the rent per square metre in listings for your budget; third, the school and childcare you need; fourth, how much Dutch you speak. You can always move later.
Practical First Steps
Whichever city you pick:
- Get your BSN application sorted in the first week
- Open a Dutch bank account (see how to open a bank account)
- Compare and switch Dutch health insurance; both cities operate the same national system
- Set up DigiD for government services
- If renting, secure a contract before arrival or use a relocation service for the first 30 days
For a complete first-month checklist, see our first 30 days in the Netherlands checklist.
Final Thought
Both cities are workable. Pick the one that matches where you are now, using figures you have checked yourself.
