It was built from scratch on reclaimed polder land in Flevoland, with the first residents arriving in 1976. There were no existing streets to build around, no medieval centre to preserve, no inherited character to work with. The city was designed from the ground up, and it shows.
That history explains the city’s strengths and its limitations. The infrastructure is modern, the green space is generous, and the housing is significantly more affordable than Amsterdam, which sits just 25 minutes away by train. For expats priced out of the capital — or simply unwilling to pay Amsterdam prices for a small apartment — Almere is worth serious consideration.
What you give up is atmosphere. The city lacks the accumulated personality of older Dutch cities. Some people find it fine, even pleasant. Others find it soulless. I’d suggest visiting on a weekday and a weekend before committing. It is a city that works on paper and divides people in person.

Almere is one of the more affordable options in the Randstad, particularly for housing. Grocery prices and services are roughly in line with the national average — the saving is almost entirely in rent.

Best Neighbourhoods for Expats
Almere is made up of several distinct districts, each with its own character. They vary enough that it is worth knowing the differences before you start searching for housing.
Almere Stad (Centrum) — The main city centre, built around a pedestrianised shopping area and the central station. The architecture is deliberately bold in places — several well-known Dutch architects worked here in the 1990s and 2000s. Apartments above and around the centre are practical for commuters to Amsterdam. 1-bedroom average €1,000–€1,250. The area is active during daytime but can feel quiet in the evenings.
Almere Haven — The original district, built first in the late 1970s, with a village-like scale and streets that feel somewhat older and more settled than the rest of the city. Located on the Gooimeer lakefront. Popular with people who want a quieter base within Almere. 1-bedroom average €950–€1,150. A separate train station connects to Amsterdam, though less frequently than Almere Centraal.
Almere Buiten — The largest district by area, predominantly family housing — terraced houses, semi-detached properties, and larger gardens than you would find anywhere near Amsterdam at similar prices. It is the obvious choice if you have children and want space. 1-bedroom average €900–€1,100; family homes (3–4 bedrooms) €1,500–€2,000. Less walkable than the Centrum, more car-dependent.
Almere Poort — The newest district, built after 2000, located near the water to the south. Architecture here is more contemporary, and the district has attracted younger buyers and renters. Good connections to Almere Centraal. 1-bedroom average €1,000–€1,200. Still developing — some amenities are limited compared to Almere Stad.
Working in Almere
Almere’s economy is substantial for a city of its size, though the job market is concentrated in a narrower range of sectors than nearby Amsterdam or Utrecht.
Construction and real estate have always been central to Almere — the city is still growing, and large-scale development projects continue. Logistics is the other major sector, with several large distribution centres in and around the city taking advantage of the location between Amsterdam and the rest of the country.
Government services are well represented. The provincial government of Flevoland is based in nearby Lelystad, but a significant number of public sector roles are located in Almere itself. Retail is a major employer given the scale of the city’s shopping facilities.
The tech and creative sector is growing, with some Amsterdam-based companies opening Almere offices as they expand. The city has invested in business parks — the Almere Business District near the Centrum and the logistics zones near the A6 motorway are the main concentrations.
In practice, many Almere residents commute to Amsterdam. The 25-minute train journey makes this practical, and for professionals working in Amsterdam who want affordable housing, this is the most common arrangement. Train frequency is good — services run every 15 minutes at peak times.

Getting Registered
Registration is handled by Gemeente Almere. Appointments can be booked through the municipality’s online portal. Waiting times are typically 1–3 weeks, which is faster than Amsterdam but slower than smaller municipalities.
Standard documentation required: valid passport or ID, rental or purchase contract confirming your address in Almere, and employment contract or proof of sufficient funds if not employed. Your BSN (citizen service number) is issued on the day of your registration appointment.
If you arrive without a fixed address — staying with friends or in temporary accommodation — you cannot register until you have a rental contract. Sorting housing before you arrive, or within the first week, is worth prioritising.

Flevoziekenhuis in Almere is the main hospital, a modern general hospital with a broad range of departments. It is not an academic medical centre — for specialist or complex care, patients are referred to Amsterdam UMC or other large centres in Amsterdam or Utrecht. For the vast majority of expat needs, Flevoziekenhuis is adequate and well run.
Finding a GP (huisarts) in Almere can take longer than in many Dutch cities. The city has grown faster than its GP capacity, and some practices have closed their lists. Budget 2–6 weeks to get registered with a GP, and start the search before you need one. English-language capacity among GPs varies; the city is less internationally saturated than Amsterdam, so finding an English-speaking practice may require some effort.

Transport
Almere has two main train stations: Almere Centraal and Almere Buiten. Almere Haven has its own smaller station. The Flevo line runs direct services to Amsterdam Centraal (25 minutes), Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA (20 minutes), and onward to Utrecht (35 minutes total). Schiphol is reached via a change at Amsterdam Bijlmer or Amsterdam Centraal, taking around 40 minutes.
Within Almere, cycling is practical in the Centrum and Haven districts — the flat polder terrain means there are no hills, and the city was designed with cycle infrastructure built in. In the outer districts — particularly Buiten — distances are longer and a car or bus is more useful.
Bus connections within the city are run by Connexxion and cover the main residential areas, though services to some parts of Almere Buiten and Almere Poort are infrequent outside peak hours.
Parking is significantly easier in Almere than in Amsterdam or Utrecht, and car ownership is higher than average. If you drive regularly, the road infrastructure is well-maintained — the A6 motorway provides direct access toward Amsterdam and south toward Utrecht.

Almere vs Amsterdam
This comparison comes up constantly, so it is worth addressing directly. Almere attracts most of its expat residents from one specific group: people who need to be within commuting distance of Amsterdam but cannot afford — or do not want — to pay Amsterdam housing prices.
The maths are real. On a salary of €50,000, you will live comfortably in Almere and feel financially stretched in Amsterdam. The train journey is 25 minutes. If your employer is in the Zuidas or anywhere served by Amsterdam Centraal, the commute is manageable.
What Amsterdam has that Almere does not: established international expat community, cultural infrastructure (museums, music venues, international restaurants), and the accumulated social life that comes with a city of 900,000 people. Almere has green space, affordable housing, modern infrastructure, and proximity to Amsterdam without Amsterdam prices.
Neither answer is wrong. It depends what you actually want from your daily life outside working hours.

Expat Community & Social Life
Almere’s expat community is less visible than in cities built around a university or a major multinational. Most international residents came because of housing affordability rather than employment — they work in Amsterdam, Utrecht, or at Schiphol, and Almere is where they could afford to live. That shared circumstance creates a social foundation, but it does not produce the tight professional communities you find in Eindhoven or Leiden.
The Almere Expats Facebook group is the main informal network. InterNations Almere has events, smaller than the Amsterdam equivalent but functional. Several sports clubs in the Centrum and Haven areas have English-speaking membership — hockey clubs, football teams, and running groups are the most commonly mentioned by expats who have built their social life here.
For cultural activities at scale, Amsterdam is the realistic answer. Most Almere residents make regular trips to Amsterdam for concerts, museums, and events — the 25-minute train makes this straightforward. Almere has its own cultural facilities: the Schouwburg, the new Almere City FC stadium, and a cinema complex in the Centrum. They are functional rather than distinctive.
The Gooimeer and Markermeer lakes along the eastern and northern edges of the city are a genuine outdoor amenity. Watersports are popular — sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding are all active communities, particularly in the Haven district where the waterfront infrastructure supports them.
Schools and Families
Almere has an international school. The Almere International School (AIS) provides education in English, primarily for the international community that arrived via corporate Amsterdam connections. Capacity is limited; waiting lists apply. Contact them before arrival if you are arriving with school-age children.
Dutch-medium primary and secondary schools in Almere are numerous — the city is large enough to have a wide range of options. Several schools in the Haven and Stad districts have experience with non-Dutch speaking children, which matters for families arriving mid-year.
Almere is one of the more practical Dutch cities for families with children in terms of housing supply. The Buiten district has the largest supply of family homes with gardens, good schools, and local sports clubs. The price comparison with the Randstad for a 3 or 4-bedroom family home is very stark — what costs €500,000 in Amsterdam typically costs €350,000–€400,000 in Almere, and rental equivalents reflect a similar differential.
Housing Search: Practical Advice
Almere’s housing market is less competitive than the Randstad cities. There is a reasonable supply of private rental properties across the districts, and the pressure to make immediate decisions after a viewing is lower.
The main search platforms are Pararius, Funda, and local Almere agencies. Connexxion (the housing association for Flevoland) manages a large social housing stock in Almere — the waiting list is long, but worth registering on if you think you will be in the Netherlands for several years.
District choice matters more in Almere than in most Dutch cities because the districts are spread out and do not all connect equally well. If you commute to Amsterdam Centraal by train, Almere Stad (Centraal station) or Haven (its own station) are the logical bases. If you drive and work south of Amsterdam or in Utrecht, Almere Buiten or Poort may suit better for the road access.
A car is more useful in Almere than in most Dutch cities. The outer districts — Buiten, Poort — are designed around road access, and bus services to some areas outside peak hours are infrequent. If you do not drive, base yourself in the Stad or Haven district where the rail and cycling connections are better.
