Verdict: Revolut can be a practical account for eligible Dutch residents, but the old claim that every Dutch customer receives only a Lithuanian IBAN is no longer current. Revolut says new customers of its Dutch branch receive an NL IBAN automatically. The right decision now turns on branch assignment, current fees, payment features and the protection statement for the product you use.
What Changed for Dutch Customers?
Revolut’s Netherlands Help Centre says:
- customers opening an account after the Dutch branch launched automatically receive an NL IBAN;
- eligible Dutch customers with an LT IBAN are migrated to the Dutch branch and receive an NL IBAN;
- an old LT IBAN may continue to work during a migration, while the NL IBAN becomes the primary identifier.
That makes articles warning all Dutch users about a permanent LT IBAN obsolete. Always use the IBAN displayed under the relevant currency account rather than copying a country code from a review.
Residence and Moving-Country Rules
Branch assignment follows the account and residence information accepted by Revolut. Use an accurate legal address and declare the tax residences requested during onboarding.
The current country-change instructions say that moving to another supported country can require closing the existing account before opening a new one there. Someone arriving with an account opened abroad should therefore follow the in-app process; changing an address is not a guaranteed instant migration to an NL IBAN.
Salary and SEPA Payments
A Dutch employer needs valid payment details before its payroll cut-off, not necessarily an IBAN that begins with NL. The European Commission describes refusal of a reachable SEPA account because it is located in another Member State as IBAN discrimination.
Practical checks before sharing Revolut details:
- Confirm that the account is fully verified.
- Copy the account-holder name and EUR IBAN from the app.
- Ask payroll for its submission deadline and supported transfer type.
- If a non-NL SEPA IBAN is rejected solely for its country prefix, ask for the legal basis and use the official complaint route where appropriate.
This does not guarantee that every payment, direct debit or merchant flow is supported. It separates legal IBAN discrimination from legitimate product or payment-scheme limitations.
Fees and Exchange
Revolut’s plan prices, fair-use allowances, weekend rules, ATM limits and included insurance can change independently. A table copied in January can be misleading by August.
Before paying for a plan, compare in the app:
- monthly or annual plan cost;
- exchange rate and any additional fee for the currencies and time of your transfer;
- ATM allowance and operator fees;
- card delivery and replacement costs;
- insurance eligibility, exclusions and activation conditions;
- cancellation or downgrade terms.
Judge the account using a live quote for a transfer you actually make. “Free exchange” or “interbank rate” is not a complete cost comparison without limits, timing and fees.
Deposit Protection and Safeguarding
Revolut Bank UAB is a Lithuanian bank and operates a Dutch branch. That does not justify applying one protection label to every balance or feature. Revolut’s own product information can distinguish current-account deposits, instant-access savings and investment or money-market products.
Open the protection or deposit-information document for the exact product and check:
- the legal entity holding the money;
- whether it is an eligible bank deposit or another financial product;
- the applicable guarantee scheme and statutory limit;
- whether several balances are aggregated under one limit;
- any exclusions relevant to residence or entity type.
Revolut Versus Wise and a Dutch Bank
These are not interchangeable products.
| Need | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Dutch current account | NL IBAN, local payment features, service, fees and Dutch deposit information |
| Revolut | Dutch-branch status, displayed IBAN, plan limits and product-specific protection |
| Wise | EUR account details, live transfer quote and safeguarding; Wise is not presented as a Dutch bank account |
| Traditional bank | Onboarding documents, total account fees, support and credit products |
For international transfers, compare Revolut’s live quote with a bank and with Wise’s live quote. The result depends on currency, amount, funding method and timing; no provider wins every route.
Who Should Consider Revolut?
Revolut may fit if the customer is eligible for the Dutch branch, the displayed payment details work for the intended transfers, and the selected plan’s actual benefits exceed its cost. It may be less suitable when branch migration is unresolved, the user needs a product Revolut does not currently offer, or a simpler Dutch-bank setup would avoid unnecessary accounts.
Do not open three accounts merely because a comparison page recommends a “stack.” Each extra account adds fees, identity checks, security settings and administration.
Setup Checklist
- Confirm the legal country of residence and supported branch.
- Complete identity and tax-residence requests accurately.
- Inspect the actual EUR IBAN in the app.
- Read the current plan fee schedule.
- Read the product-specific deposit or safeguarding information.
- Enable a unique passcode, biometrics and transaction notifications.
- Test a small transfer before a payroll or rent deadline.
- Re-check fees before large currency conversions.
Method and Sources
This review was corrected on 31 August 2026 using Revolut’s Netherlands Help Centre and the European Commission’s IBAN-discrimination guidance. It does not use personal-use stories, client anecdotes or static star ratings. Provider conditions can change after publication, so the in-app contractual information prevails.

Frequently Asked Questions
What IBAN does Revolut give customers in the Netherlands?
Revolut says customers who open an account after the Dutch branch launched automatically receive an NL IBAN. Eligible existing Dutch customers are migrated from an LT IBAN; check the exact primary details shown in your app.
Can a Dutch employer pay salary to Revolut?
Use the account-holder name and reachable SEPA IBAN shown in the app, and confirm the payroll deadline. Refusing a reachable account solely because its IBAN is from another EU Member State can be unlawful IBAN discrimination.
Can I change an account from another country into a Dutch Revolut account?
Do not assume an address edit is enough. Revolut's current country-change help says a move to another country may require closing the old account and opening one in the new supported country.
What does Revolut cost in 2026?
Plans, limits and benefits change. Check the live Dutch plan and fee pages in the app before applying; this review intentionally does not freeze a monthly price or exchange allowance.
Is money at Revolut protected by a deposit guarantee?
Protection depends on the entity and product holding the money. Revolut Bank UAB is a Lithuanian bank with a Dutch branch, but savings and payment products may have different arrangements. Read the deposit information shown for the specific product.
