In this guide
Arnhem sits on the Rhine (here called the Neder-Rijn), at the edge of the Veluwe. People move here for work at organisations based in the region, for study or work at ArtEZ University of the Arts, or because they want green surroundings close to a city. This guide covers neighbourhoods, registration, nature and transport, and points you to the tools to check your own budget.
Before you start planning: use the housing budget checker to see what Arnhem looks like on your specific budget, and check the full finding housing in the Netherlands guide for the rental market strategy that actually works.
If you are comparing cities, we also have a detailed guide to the best cities in the Netherlands for expats, and our Nijmegen city guide covers Arnhem’s nearest neighbour.

Why Arnhem?
Arnhem on the Neder-Rijn, with the Veluwe forests visible to the north and east.
Arnhem is the capital of the province of Gelderland and has 171,907 inhabitants (municipality, Statistics Netherlands, 1 August 2026). For comparison, Nijmegen has 189,756, Utrecht 377,980 and Amsterdam 946,856 (end of August 2026).
The Veluwe is Arnhem’s defining advantage. The Hoge Veluwe National Park, which includes the Kröller-Müller Museum, can be reached from the city; the park charges an entrance fee and lets visitors use free White Bikes (hogeveluwe.nl).
The Battle of Arnhem in September 1944 (Operation Market Garden, the subject of the film A Bridge Too Far) is a visible part of the city’s history. The Airborne Museum Hartenstein in nearby Oosterbeek and the John Frost Bridge across the Rhine are the best-known places connected to it.
ArtEZ University of the Arts has an Academy of Art & Design in Arnhem. If you work in a creative field, this gives Arnhem a distinct professional setting compared with a purely corporate or academic city.
Neighbourhoods for Expats
We do not list rents per neighbourhood: there is no primary source for current rents at that level. Look at live listings and visit areas before you commit.
Centrum
- Vibe: The rebuilt city centre with shopping streets and the main station
- Best for: People who want to walk to shops and the train
Arnhem Centrum is practical and central. Much of the centre was rebuilt after the Second World War, so it looks different from canal-city centres such as Leiden or Haarlem.
Klarendal
- Vibe: A neighbourhood associated with the ArtEZ fashion and design scene, with independent shops and studios
- Best for: People in creative industries who want character over convenience
The Klarendalseweg is the main street. Walk it on a Saturday to see which shops and cafés are open.
Sonsbeek
- Vibe: Residential area around Sonsbeekpark
- Best for: Families and professionals who want green surroundings
Sonsbeekpark is the centrepiece here, with a cascade and walking paths, and connects northward to the wider green area around the city. Check on a map how far a specific address is from the station and the park.
Presikhaaf
- Vibe: A post-war residential district east of the centre
- Best for: People who prioritise practicality over neighbourhood character
Check the supermarkets, bus lines and cycling routes near each address you are considering.
Velp
- Vibe: A village in the municipality of Rheden, directly east of Arnhem, with a quiet residential character
- Best for: Families who want a quieter setting with quick access to nature
Because Velp is not part of the municipality of Arnhem, municipal rules and local taxes follow Rheden, not Arnhem. Check the registration and tax details with Gemeente Rheden if you choose to live there.
Budget and Housing Costs
The Arnhem rental market has the same structural shortage as the rest of the country, so expect competition for well-located homes. The legal basics are the same everywhere in the Netherlands.
| Expense | What to check |
|---|---|
| Rent | Live listings for your neighbourhood and the housing budget checker |
| Health insurance | €157 per month on average (Rijksoverheid) |
| Other costs | The cost of living calculator |
Deposits: For contracts from 1 July 2023 the legal maximum deposit is two months’ bare rent (Rijksoverheid). This is a significant upfront cost. If you are transferring money from abroad to cover your deposit and first month, compare the exchange rate and fees of Wise with those of your Dutch bank.
For finding properties, Kamernet lists both furnished and unfurnished rentals and is widely used by the international community.
Employers and Study
Arnhem is the provincial capital of Gelderland. Organisations based in or around the city include Rijnstate hospital (locations in Arnhem, Elst and Zevenaar, rijnstate.nl), Alliander (statutory seat in Arnhem, alliander.com) and ArtEZ University of the Arts (6 academies, active in Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle, artez.nl). Check employers’ own career pages for current vacancies and for whether they sponsor visas.
Nature and Outdoor Life
Sonsbeekpark: A large park next to the Sonsbeek neighbourhood, with an 18th-century cascade and walking paths.
Veluwe and Hoge Veluwe National Park: The Hoge Veluwe National Park requires an entrance fee, includes the Kröller-Müller Museum and offers free White Bikes (hogeveluwe.nl).
Dutch Open Air Museum and Burgers’ Zoo: Both are in Arnhem and popular with families. Check their own websites for opening hours and prices.
Cycling in and around Arnhem: The cycling in the Netherlands guide covers everything you need to know about getting started with Dutch cycling culture.
Transport
Train: Arnhem Centraal is a rail junction for domestic routes and for international trains to Germany. Check journey times and connections on ns.nl or in the NS app before you plan a commute.
Bus: Arnhem has an urban bus network, and regional buses connect to surrounding villages. Check connections for your address on 9292.nl.
Car: For those who drive, Arnhem is on the A12, the A325 and the A50.
Cycling: Cycling is a normal way to get around the city. See the cycling guide linked above.
Getting Registered and Settled
Once you have secured housing, you register with Gemeente Arnhem to get your BSN, the citizen service number you need for your bank account, health insurance and tax obligations. Read the BSN registration guide for the full process.
According to Gemeente Arnhem, if you move to the Netherlands for the first time and plan to stay at least 4 months, you register within 5 days of arrival by making an appointment. Bring a valid ID or residence permit, a valid travel document or other proof of nationality, original foreign documents that meet the legalisation and translation requirements, proof of your new address and any family members who move with you. Registration is completed within 4 weeks; if you come from outside the EU, the IND must approve first. You receive written confirmation and your BSN.
Dutch health insurance is mandatory: take it out as soon as you can and no later than 4 months after arriving, with cover from the day you arrived (Government.nl). The Dutch health insurance guide for expats explains the system, what the basic package covers, and how to choose an insurer.
For more on your cost of living, see the cost of living in the Netherlands guide and the cost of living calculator.
Arnhem vs Nijmegen
These two cities are close together and often come up together in expat searches. The choice usually comes down to employer and lifestyle preference.
| Arnhem | Nijmegen | |
|---|---|---|
| Population (CBS) | 171,907 (1 Aug 2026) | 189,756 (end Aug 2026) |
| Study and work | ArtEZ University of the Arts, Rijnstate, Alliander | Radboud University, Radboud UMC, NXP |
| Nature | The Veluwe | Ooijpolder and the Waal river |
If your employer is in Arnhem, or you are interested in fashion and design, Arnhem fits. If you work or study at Radboud or NXP, Nijmegen is the obvious base. See the Nijmegen guide for the full comparison.
Understanding the Arnhem Housing Market
Competition for well-located properties is real, and the structural shortage that affects the whole country applies here too. Before you start viewing, read the Dutch housing crisis explained for expats, which covers the regulatory framework (including the 2024 Wet betaalbare huur changes) and practical strategies.
To see new rentals sooner, you can set up alerts on the main platforms or use Dean, a paid alert service that says it checks more than 1,000 rental sources and compares new listings with your search profile. Dean says you can try it free for 3 days and cancel month-to-month.

The Battle of Arnhem
The Battle of Arnhem took place in September 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden, when British and Polish airborne troops tried to secure the Rhine crossing. The Airborne Museum Hartenstein in Oosterbeek is the best-known museum about the battle, and the Oosterbeek War Cemetery is where many of the fallen are buried. Check the museum’s own website for opening hours and for the dates of the annual commemorations in September.
Final Assessment
Arnhem is not for everyone. If you need a canal-city centre, Arnhem’s post-war centre is different from Leiden or Haarlem, and if you commute to a distant city, check the journey on ns.nl first.
For people who want green surroundings and a regional city with a university of the arts, Arnhem is worth a closer look.
For next steps, start with the housing budget checker and the finding housing guide. For financial preparation, the cost of living guide is worth reading before you set your budget.
