Why Tilburg?

FactorTilburg
Population (municipality)229,805
UniversityTilburg University
RegionNoord-Brabant

Population figures are whole-municipality counts from Statistics Netherlands (start of August 2026). We do not give rent or journey-time comparisons: rent figures available online are asking prices from commercial sites, and train times are best checked on ns.nl for your own route.

Tilburg sits in the province of Noord-Brabant, a region with its own identity in the Netherlands. The city was a centre of the Dutch textile industry, and some of the former industrial buildings have been converted into homes, studios and cultural spaces. The TextielMuseum is one example.

Tilburg University

Tilburg University is a major institution in the city and shapes its student and academic population. If your move is connected to the university as an academic, researcher or postgraduate student, ask the university about its support for international staff and students, including housing.

Eindhoven and the Regional Job Market

Tilburg is on the rail network between Den Bosch, Breda and Eindhoven, so some people who work elsewhere in Brabant choose to live in Tilburg. Check ns.nl for journey times and costs on your own route before you decide.

Loonse en Drunense Duinen: Nature Nearby

The Loonse en Drunense Duinen is a nature reserve north of Tilburg with an inland dune system, heathland and forest. It is a short ride away by bike or car, so check the route and the reserve’s own information if you want to visit.

Neighbourhoods for Expats

We describe the character of each area but do not give rents, because we could not source them. Check current listings for the property type you want.

Centrum

  • Vibe: The compact city centre, with the Piushaven harbour area, the main shopping streets, and restaurants and bars
  • Best for: Singles, couples, people who want amenities within cycling distance
  • Consider: Central areas tend to be busier, and parking is limited

The Piushaven is a regenerated harbour area in the centre with restaurants and event spaces along the water.

The Spoorzone, close to Tilburg Centraal station, is a regeneration area that includes the 013 concert venue and other cultural spaces.

Oud-Noord

  • Vibe: The former textile factory district north of the city centre, with converted mill buildings and independent businesses
  • Best for: Young professionals, creative workers, anyone who wants a neighbourhood with character
  • Consider: Conversions vary in quality, so view several options and check insulation, heating and the energy label

Southern Residential Areas

  • Vibe: Quieter residential neighbourhoods south of the city centre, with houses and green space, including the Wandelbos park area
  • Best for: Families with children, people who prefer quiet and space
  • Consider: Less walkable to restaurants and cultural venues

Reeshof

  • Vibe: A large modern district in the west of Tilburg
  • Best for: Families or couples who want newer housing and do not mind being further from the centre
  • Consider: Check the public transport connections to the centre and to the station for your own routine

Rent Prices

We do not publish rent ranges for Tilburg. Publicly available figures are asking prices from commercial listing sites and vary by property type, neighbourhood, energy label and furnishing. Furnished homes are usually offered at different rents from unfurnished ones, so compare like with like.

For context: the cost of living guide has a breakdown of costs that do not depend on the city, and our cost of living calculator lets you model your own situation. For contracts signed from 1 July 2023 the deposit is legally capped at two months’ base rent (Rijksoverheid).

Finding a Place to Rent in Tilburg

The rental market in Tilburg can be competitive for good properties. Standard platforms:

  • Kamernet — a platform for rooms and studios, widely used by students and young professionals
  • Dean — a paid alert service that says it checks more than 1,000 rental sources and compares new listings with your search profile; Dean says it offers a 3-day free trial and month-to-month billing
  • Funda — for the main rental market across all property types
  • Pararius — a rental platform widely used by expats
  • Huurwoningen.nl — lists homes from rental agents and private landlords across the Netherlands and has an English-language version. Searching, saved search profiles and email alerts are free; to respond to listings or see landlord contact details you need Premium (EUR 29.95 a month, cancellable monthly; a 14-day trial costs EUR 0.01 and continues at EUR 29.95 a month unless you cancel within 14 days) (huurwoningen.nl, checked 21 October 2026)

Because Tilburg has a large student population, demand for rooms and small properties can rise at the start of the academic year, so start your search early.

For transferring money for rental deposits and advance rent payments, Wise can be an option; compare the total cost of the transfer, including the exchange rate and any fee, with your bank, particularly if you are sending from a non-euro currency.

Employers in Tilburg

Tilburg University, the Elisabeth-TweeSteden Ziekenhuis (the main regional hospital) and Fontys Hogescholen are institutions in Tilburg. The region also has employers in logistics and industry; check the employer’s own website and job listings for current vacancies and for whether the role is in English.

Brabant Culture

Noord-Brabant has its own regional character, and Tilburg’s local culture includes carnaval, celebrated in the days before Lent, and the Tilburg Kermis, the annual funfair in the city centre. Whether you find the local social culture easy to join depends on you, so look for clubs, sports teams and neighbourhood events as a way to meet people.

Transport and Getting Around

Tilburg is flat and has cycling infrastructure, and many people get around by bike. Buses serve the city; check the operator’s current network and timetable for your own routes.

Train connections: Tilburg Centraal is on the Dutch rail network with connections towards Den Bosch, Eindhoven and Breda. Check ns.nl for current routes and journey times.

For the OV-chipkaart and public transport system, see our OV-chipkaart guide.

The Tilburg Kermis: What You Need to Know Before You Move

The Tilburg Kermis is a large annual funfair in the city centre in July. Plan around it if you are moving in July: viewings, moving vehicles and parking in the centre can be difficult while it runs. If you have flexibility on your move date, check the dates with the organisers and aim for before or after.

Registering and Getting Your BSN

Once you have found your accommodation, your first administrative task is registering with the gemeente (municipality). For Tilburg, make an appointment with Gemeente Tilburg through its website. Bring your passport, your rental contract and, if applicable, your residence permit, and check the municipality’s page for the full list. Registration gives you your BSN (citizen service number), which is required for almost every subsequent Dutch administrative task.

Read the full BSN process in our BSN registration guide.

After your BSN, arrange your health insurance no later than 4 months after arrival (Government.nl). Read the Dutch health insurance guide for expats for a comparison of the main providers and what the Dutch system covers.

Is Tilburg Right for You?

Tilburg may suit you if you:

  • Have a specific employer connection, such as the university, or commute elsewhere in Brabant by train
  • Want to live outside the Randstad in a university city
  • Are open to a smaller-scale social scene
  • Value cycling and access to nature

It may suit you less if you need a large, established international community, or if your work requires frequent trips to The Hague or Amsterdam; check ns.nl for your own journey times.

Arriving in Tilburg: First Week Admin

What is the current population of Tilburg?

Tilburg can work well for expats connected to Tilburg University, to employers in the region, or who want to live in the south of the Netherlands outside the Randstad. English is widely used in academic and professional settings, but check how much Dutch your own daily life will need.

How much does rent cost in Tilburg?

We do not give a rent range for Tilburg, because publicly available rent figures are asking prices from commercial listing sites that change quickly. Check current listings on Funda, Pararius, Huurwoningen.nl and Kamernet for the property type and neighbourhood you want, and ask what the service charges (servicekosten) are on top of the base rent.

What are the best neighbourhoods in Tilburg for expats?

Neighbourhoods that expats often look at are Centrum (central, with the Piushaven area), Oud-Noord (former textile factories converted to homes, studios and cultural spaces), the quieter residential areas in the south, and Reeshof, a large modern district in the west. Which one suits you depends on your budget, transport and household; visit before you commit.

What is the Tilburg Kermis and should I know about it?

The Tilburg Kermis is a large annual funfair held in the city centre in July. During the fair the centre is busy, so plan viewings and moves around it, and check the dates with the organisers.
