Direct answer: A relocation service takes on parts of your move: housing search, paperwork, registration and school search. There is no standard price, so ask for written quotes for the same scope. A full package can be worth it when your employer pays, when you move as a family into a tight housing market, or when your start date is close. If you are an EU citizen with time to spare, you can often do most of it yourself with good guides.
If you are still working out the basics of your move, start with our complete guide to moving to the Netherlands first, then come back here when you are evaluating whether to hire help.

How to find and compare relocation companies
We do not rank relocation companies, and we have not compared them. Build a shortlist from sources you can check yourself:
- EuRA member search. EuRA is the European Relocation Association. Its website (eura-relocation.com) has a member search and a list of EuRA Global Quality Seal (EGQS) certified members.
- The EuRA Global Quality Seal. According to EuRA, the seal is an accreditation programme for relocation providers based on an ISO 9001 process management model, with processes and KPIs that are externally audited. Membership or a seal does not guarantee a good result for your move, but it is a credential you can verify.
Then request written quotes from at least two providers for the identical scope: the number of viewings, whether school search is included, and what happens if the first properties fall through. Ask each of them the same three questions: who is my day-to-day consultant, which services are done by your own employees and which are outsourced, and what exactly ends your engagement.
If your employer is choosing for you, use the same questions to review their preferred vendor.
What destination services should include
“Destination services” is industry jargon for the local, on-the-ground side of a move, as distinct from the moving company that ships your possessions and from an immigration lawyer. A full scope typically covers:
- Pre-arrival orientation: a neighbourhood briefing or tour
- Home search: shortlisting, viewings, help with the rental terms and a review of the contract before you sign
- Settling-in support: gemeente registration and BSN, utilities, internet, health insurance and DigiD
- School search: assessment, shortlist, visits and application support for families
- Tenancy and departure services: check-in and check-out inspections and lease termination when you leave
Ask which of these a provider performs with its own staff, because the answer shows how much is subcontracted.
What relocation services can do
The term “relocation service” is used loosely. It can mean a single housing agent or a company that supports you from before you arrive until after you have settled in. When you compare options, establish what is included.
Visa and immigration support
This is where complexity lives, especially for non-EU nationals. A relocation company may manage the document gathering for your IND application or work with an immigration lawyer. For people on a highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant) permit, the employer applies for the permit; only an employer recognised by the IND can do so (IND).
A relocation company is not a law firm. If your situation is complicated, ask whether the provider works with an immigration lawyer.
Housing search
Housing is tight in the Netherlands. A relocation company or housing agent can search on your behalf, which may include viewings and a review of the contract before you sign. For what the process looks like with and without help, see our guide to finding housing in the Netherlands as an expat.
Two rules from Rijksoverheid are useful when you compare quotes. A rental agent who works for the landlord and offers you a home cannot charge you agency fees; you only pay if you hire an agent to search for a home that was not already in their offer. And the deposit (waarborgsom) may be at most 2 months of basic rent for contracts signed from 1 July 2023.
School search
For families, a provider can assess your children’s age, language level and educational background and shortlist local Dutch, international or bilingual schools. Ask what the service includes, for example visits and application support.
Gemeente registration
If you come to live in the Netherlands for more than 4 months, you must register with the gemeente within 5 days of arrival; registration is free and gives you a BSN (Rijksoverheid). A provider can help you prepare the documents and book the appointment, but the registration itself costs nothing when you do it yourself.
Bank account opening
ABN AMRO and ING let you open an account before your BSN arrives (ABN AMRO within 120 days, ING within 90 days for non-EEA passport holders). A provider can help you with the sequence of steps.
Whether or not you use a relocation service, you can set up a Wise account before you arrive: it handles international transfers with a stated fee, and verified customers get EUR account details with a non-Dutch euro IBAN (Wise uses a Belgian BIC and address).

Once you have your BSN, our guide to bank accounts for expats in the Netherlands walks you through which Dutch banks are worth opening an account with.
Orientation tours
Many packages include an orientation day in your new city: neighbourhoods, local services and transport. This can help if you arrive with no prior knowledge; if you have visited before or have Dutch colleagues, it may not be worth paying for separately.
What to check in a quote
We have no primary source for market prices, so we do not quote ranges. Instead, check these points in every quote:
- Scope in writing. Which services are included, how many property viewings and school consultations, and what happens if the first housing options fall through.
- Fixed price or hourly billing. If you are billed by the hour, ask for an estimate and a cap.
- Extras. Ask what is billed on top of the base price.
- BTW (VAT). Check whether the quote includes or excludes BTW, so you compare like with like.
When a relocation service can be worth it
- Your employer pays. Use the service, and ask your employer to review its vendor if the quality is poor.
- You move as a family into a tight housing market. The housing search, school search and a fixed start date all have to fit together.
- Your permit situation is not straightforward. For example if a partner comes from a third country or children have different nationalities. Ask whether the provider works with an immigration lawyer.
- You have a short runway before your start date.
- You have never lived abroad. Having someone manage the sequence can help.
When you can probably skip it
- You are an EU citizen with a simple move. You do not need a residence permit to work (IND) and you can register with the gemeente yourself, free of charge.
- You have time and your housing is arranged. If your company provides housing or you have secured a rental, the remaining administration is manageable with a good guide, for example our checklist for your first 30 days in the Netherlands.
A hybrid approach
You can also outsource only the part that costs you the most time:
- Use your employer’s HR team for the visa and IND application, where the employer applies for the permit.
- Hire a housing agent specifically for the rental search; the agent-fee rule above tells you when you pay.
- Handle gemeente registration, BSN and the bank account yourself, using guides like this one.
- If needed, book an independent adviser to check documents before appointments.
After the relocation company hands off
Most providers consider their job done once your rental contract is signed, your BSN is arranged and a school place is confirmed. Health insurance, importing a car, Dutch income tax, the 30% ruling or registering a business may not be covered, so check the scope.
On health insurance: Dutch basic health insurance must be taken out as soon as possible and no later than 4 months after you arrive, with coverage from the day of arrival (Government.nl). For the period before you move, travel-medical cover such as SafetyWing is an option; it is not a substitute for the compulsory Dutch basisverzekering.

Make sure you know when the service ends and what you have to sort yourself. Our checklist for the first 30 days in the Netherlands covers the tasks that typically fall in the gap.
What a relocation company cannot do
- Speed up the IND. The IND decides within its legal decision period (90 days for most work permits, IND). A provider can make sure documents are complete, but cannot expedite the decision.
- Guarantee a home in a specific neighbourhood or at a specific price. Be sceptical of promises about location and timing, and check whether the budget fits the market before you sign.
Summary: should you hire a relocation company?
If your employer is paying, take the service and put your effort into choosing a good provider. If you are paying yourself, compare what each part would cost against how much time and stress you would save, and consider outsourcing only the housing search. Ask for written quotes, compare the same scope, and check credentials you can verify.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a relocation service in the Netherlands actually do?
Relocation services can cover some combination of: support with visa and residence permit paperwork, housing search and help with the rental contract, school search for children, gemeente registration, bank account opening, orientation tours, and administrative setup. The exact scope depends on the package, so ask for a written list of what is included.
How much does a relocation service in the Netherlands cost?
There is no standard price. Providers set their own prices per package or per hour, and we do not have a primary source for market rates. Ask at least two providers for a written quote for the same scope, check whether it includes BTW (VAT), and ask what is billed extra.
Is a relocation service worth it for an EU citizen moving to the Netherlands?
Often not for a full package. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals do not need a residence permit to work in the Netherlands (IND), and registering with the gemeente is free (Rijksoverheid). A targeted service, such as help with the housing search, may fit better than a full package. It depends on your budget, your timing and how much of the process you want to do yourself.
What is the difference between a relocation company and an expat coach?
A relocation company is typically a business offering packaged services such as housing, immigration administration and school search. An expat coach is usually an individual who helps you understand the system and prepare your documents, and does less of the work for you. Which one fits depends on whether you want guidance or want the work done for you.
How do I know if a relocation company in the Netherlands is reliable?
Check whether the company is a member of EuRA, the European Relocation Association, and whether it holds the EuRA Global Quality Seal, an accreditation for relocation providers based on an ISO 9001 process management model with an external audit (EuRA). Neither proves quality on its own. Ask for client references in your situation and for a written breakdown of what is included.
Can you recommend the top relocation companies in the Netherlands?
No. We have not compared providers and we do not rank them. Use the EuRA member search and EuRA's list of EGQS-certified members to build a shortlist, and ask each provider for a written scope and quote for the same brief.
Which relocation companies offer strong destination services in the Netherlands?
Destination services means the local side of the move: orientation before you arrive, home search and help with the lease, settling-in administration (gemeente registration, BSN, utilities, insurance), school search and departure services. Ask each provider which of these its own staff perform and which are outsourced, and ask which credentials it holds, for example EuRA membership or the EGQS.
Can my employer pay for relocation services in the Netherlands?
Many employers offer relocation support to employees they recruit from abroad, but the terms differ per employer. If you are joining a company from abroad, ask HR what relocation support or allowance is included before you sign the contract.
What is the difference between an expat service and a relocation service?
A relocation service is a packaged commercial offering, such as housing search, immigration administration, gemeente registration and school search, delivered by a company that does the work for you. An expat coach is usually an individual who helps you understand the system and make your own decisions. Coaches suit people who want guidance; relocation companies suit people who want the work outsourced.
