Restaurant Delivery

Thuisbezorgd

Thuisbezorgd.nl is a restaurant delivery platform in the Netherlands.

Tips for expats:

  • Check the delivery fee and minimum order per restaurant before you order
  • Check whether the restaurant’s own website also offers delivery
  • Use the delivery notes for your intercom number or entry code

Uber Eats

Uber Eats launched in Amsterdam on 28 September 2016 (Uber newsroom). Check in the app whether it delivers to your address and what the fees are.

Grocery Delivery

Picnic

Picnic is a Dutch online supermarket without physical shops.

How Picnic works: Picnic says it always delivers for free, with orders from EUR 45. It comes to your street at fixed times every day: you choose a one-hour slot, and on the delivery day Picnic tells you to within 20 minutes when it will arrive in that hour. Its delivery vans are fully electric, and you can follow the van live in the app (picnic.app, checked 30 October 2026).

Coverage: Picnic says it now delivers in almost all large cities and villages in the Netherlands. Check your address with its postcode checker.

What to watch out for: the scheduled model means Picnic does not cover same-day needs.

Flink delivers groceries on demand. In its app listing Flink says it is not yet available in every city, so check coverage, the delivery fee and the minimum order for your address in the app.

Crisp

Crisp is an online supermarket focused on fresh and specialty products.

Pricing: the minimum order is EUR 40. Crisp charges delivery costs of EUR 1.95 to EUR 8.95 depending on where you live (free from EUR 90 in most areas and always from EUR 100), plus service costs of EUR 0.95 or EUR 2.95 depending on the size of your order. The costs are shown when you complete your order (crisp.nl, checked 30 October 2026).

Coverage: Crisp delivers across the Netherlands except the Wadden Islands and Kaageiland.

Albert Heijn Online

Albert Heijn’s online service delivers its supermarket range to your home.

Costs: Delivery costs start at EUR 1.70 per order, and you can order from EUR 45. Albert Heijn’s Bezorgbundel comes as an annual or a monthly bundle. On the annual bundle the Buurt Bezorgbundel works out at EUR 7.99 a month (EUR 95.88 a year) and the Onbeperkt Bezorgbundel at EUR 9.99 a month (EUR 119.88 a year); the monthly bundles cost EUR 10.99 (Buurt) and EUR 13.99 (Onbeperkt) a month. The minimum order is EUR 45 (ah.nl, checked 30 October 2026).

The Platform That Left the Netherlands

Deliveroo: Deliveroo’s last day of operations in the Netherlands was 30 November 2022. The company said that achieving and sustaining a top-tier market position in the Netherlands would require a disproportionate level of investment; the Netherlands accounted for 1% of its gross transaction value in the first half of 2022.

Practical Tips for Expats

Payment: check the accepted payment methods in the app at checkout. For iDEAL you need an account with a bank on the iDEAL issuer list; see the bank account guide. A Wise account is not an iDEAL issuer, but its debit card can be used where card payment is offered.

Tipping: tipping is up to you; check in the app whether you can add a tip for the courier.

Delivery notes: keep the delivery instructions simple and your address clear. Add your intercom number, apartment number or entry code in the delivery notes.

Dietary needs: use the app’s filters where available, and contact the restaurant directly if you have a serious allergy.

  1. Thuisbezorgd or Uber Eats — for restaurant delivery (compare both at your address)
  2. Picnic — for a planned weekly grocery shop, if it delivers to you
  3. Albert Heijn Online or Crisp — for the full supermarket range or fresh and specialty products
  4. Flink — for urgent top-ups

You do not need all of them. One restaurant app and one grocery service cover most situations.

Coverage: Check Your Own Address

Coverage differs per service. Picnic says it delivers in almost all large cities and villages and has a postcode checker; Crisp delivers across the Netherlands except the Wadden Islands and Kaageiland. For the other apps, enter your address in the app. If you are still deciding where to live, take our city quiz.

Ordering in Dutch: Useful Vocabulary

A few Dutch words are useful for delivery notes and restaurant communications:

  • Geen = no / without (as in “geen uien” = no onions)
  • Allergie = allergy
  • Bezorging = delivery
  • Vertraagd = delayed
  • Aanbellen = ring the bell
  • Intercom = buzzer
  • Achterdeur = back door

If your building has a coded entry system, include your intercom number or entry code in the delivery notes field. For more on daily routines in the Netherlands, see the Dutch supermarkets guide and the best Dutch apps for expats.

What Does Grocery Delivery Cost?

  • Picnic: delivery is always free, with orders from EUR 45
  • Albert Heijn: delivery from EUR 1.70 per order; Bezorgbundel: annual bundle EUR 95.88 a year (Buurt, 12 × EUR 7.99) or EUR 119.88 a year (Onbeperkt, 12 × EUR 9.99); monthly bundle EUR 10.99 or EUR 13.99 a month; minimum order EUR 45
  • Crisp: minimum order EUR 40; delivery EUR 1.95–8.95 depending on where you live (free from EUR 90 in most areas, always from EUR 100), plus EUR 0.95 or 2.95 service costs

For restaurant delivery, add up the delivery fees you paid over a month to see your own cost.

Dutch Specialties Through Delivery

Bitterballen: small deep-fried balls of meat ragout, a classic Dutch bar snack. Many cafés list them.

Stroopwafels: buy these in any supermarket.

Indonesian food: Dutch-Indonesian dishes such as rijsttafel, nasi goreng and satay are widely available from restaurants in Dutch cities.

Allergen and Dietary Information

Allergen information on delivery apps is provided by the restaurant. If you have a serious allergy, contact the restaurant directly before ordering rather than relying only on what the app shows.

Final Verdict

For restaurant delivery, compare Thuisbezorgd and Uber Eats at your address. For groceries, the choice depends on what you need: a planned shop with free delivery (Picnic, from EUR 45), fresh and specialty products (Crisp), the full supermarket range (Albert Heijn Online) or a quick top-up (Flink).

Restaurant nights: Thuisbezorgd or Uber Eats.

Emergency supplies: Flink.

These three steps cover most needs without a monthly subscription.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Food Delivery

Order early on busy evenings. Check in the app whether you can schedule a delivery time in advance.

Check for first-order offers. Delivery apps sometimes run discount codes for first orders; check the promotions section of the app.

Combine delivery with local markets. A weekly delivery for staples and a local market for fresh produce can work well together.
