This guide covers Leiden’s neighbourhoods, housing, transport and practical steps. Verify live listings, local rules and commute times before making a decision.
Why Leiden?
Photo: Leiden, the Netherlands. Source: Wikimedia Commons.
Leiden is a university city with 131,028 inhabitants (municipality, end of September 2026; Statistics Netherlands, table 37230ned). It is smaller than Amsterdam or The Hague (568,749, same CBS table), and it sits between the two, with a station on the intercity network. For households where partners work in different cities, that location can be a reason to look at Leiden. Check the current journey times in the NS planner for your own route.
Leiden is also home to Leiden University and to the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). The European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) of the European Space Agency is in Noordwijk, outside Leiden (esa.int).
Leiden’s Neighbourhoods: Where to Look
We give no rents, prices or travel times per neighbourhood, because we found no primary source for them. Use this section as orientation and check listings, local rules and travel times yourself.
- Binnenstad (city centre): the historic centre. Parking permits and garage spaces are set by the municipality and private operators; check the current rules and prices before you decide on a home without parking.
- Other districts, such as Stevenshof and Merenwijk: both have a neighbourhood market at their shopping centre (Gemeente Leiden, market permits page). We give no description of their character or location because we found no primary source; look at each district on a map and check listings before you choose.
For the Bio Science Park and ESTEC commutes, check the route options before you choose a neighbourhood. ESTEC is not in Leiden; it is in Noordwijk.
Housing
Read the tenancy agreement carefully and check what you pay in rent, service costs and deposit. The Dutch rules on rental contracts and deposits are explained in our guide to finding housing in the Netherlands as an expat.
To see new rentals sooner, you can set up alerts on the main platforms or use Dean, a paid alert service that says it checks more than 1,000 rental sources and compares new listings with your search profile. Dean says you can try it free for 3 days and cancel month-to-month.
Getting Around
Leiden has a railway station on the intercity network. Plan your route with the NS planner for the current journey times to The Hague, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. For ESTEC in Noordwijk, check bus, bike and car options for your working hours.
The International Community
If you arrive through Leiden University, LUMC or a company in the Leiden Bio Science Park, check the websites of those organisations for international networks and arrival support. If you are still negotiating an offer, the Salary Checker gives a benchmark for your sector and experience.
Schools
For families who want IB education, the International School of The Hague (ISH) offers the IB Middle Years Programme, the Career-related Programme and the Diploma Programme (ishthehague.nl). Rijnlands Lyceum Oegstgeest has an international department (rlo.nl), and the American School of The Hague has its campus in Wassenaar (ash.nl); check their programmes and admission rules directly. For Dutch-medium education, ask the municipality and individual schools about places.
Healthcare
Leiden has the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). For daily care you use a GP (huisarts), who is the gateway to specialist care. Ask practices in your area whether they accept new patients.
You must take out Dutch health insurance (zorgverzekering) as soon as possible and no later than 4 months after arriving, with cover from the day you arrived (Government.nl). The Health Insurance Wizard can help you compare policies.
Culture and Daily Life
At the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (the national museum of antiquities), adult admission is EUR 14 and visitors up to 18 are free; the museum is closed on 1 January, 27 April, 3 October and 25 December (rmo.nl, checked 31 October 2026). Naturalis Biodiversity Center (naturalis.nl) and the Wereldmuseum Leiden (leiden.wereldmuseum.nl; the old volkenkunde.nl address forwards there) are also in Leiden; check their websites for opening hours and prices.
On 3 October Leiden celebrates Leidens Ontzet, the relief of Leiden in 1574, every year; the 3 October Vereeniging publishes the programme on 3october.nl.
Cost of Living
We do not give a monthly budget for Leiden because we have no primary source for local rents, groceries or utilities. Use the Cost of Living Calculator with your own figures. The average basic health insurance premium in 2026 is €157 per month (Rijksoverheid). Transport costs depend on your commute; see the OV-chipkaart guide.
Registering in Leiden
If you will live in the Netherlands for longer than four months, you must register with the municipality within five days of arriving, and you receive your BSN (citizen service number) when you register (Government.nl). You register with the Gemeente Leiden. The BSN Planner walks you through what to prepare, and our guide to getting your BSN covers the process.
Comparing Leiden to Other Cities

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the current population of Leiden?
Leiden has 131,028 inhabitants in the municipality as a whole at the end of September 2026 (Statistics Netherlands, table 37230ned). That is the whole-municipality count, not just the built-up centre.
How expensive is housing in Leiden compared to Amsterdam?
We do not quote rents or purchase prices for Leiden because we have no primary source for them. Check live listings and the rent rules for your contract type, and see our guide to finding housing in the Netherlands for how the process works.
Is Leiden a good city for expats working in The Hague or Amsterdam?
Leiden has a station on the intercity network and sits between The Hague and Amsterdam, so people who work in either city can consider living there. Check the current journey time for your route in the NS planner, because it depends on the train and the time of day.
Are there international schools near Leiden?
Schools in the region with international education include the International School of The Hague (ISH), which offers the IB Middle Years Programme, Career-related Programme and Diploma Programme (ishthehague.nl), and Rijnlands Lyceum Oegstgeest, which has an international department (rlo.nl). Check admission rules, waiting lists and fees directly with each school.
Do I need to speak Dutch to live in Leiden?
Not to get started, but learning Dutch helps with daily life such as dealing with a landlord or a GP. If you study or work at Leiden University or LUMC, check with the institution which services are available in English. See our guide to Dutch language courses for options.
