In this guide
The two cities suit different people and different life stages. Their job markets, rhythm and size differ, so the choice usually follows your employer’s location.

Quick answer: Choose the city that is close to your work. Eindhoven is the centre of the Brainport high-tech region in the south; Utrecht is a central railway hub with a historic centre and a large university. We give no rent or salary figures here because we have no official source for them per city.
The big picture
Eindhoven is in North Brabant, in the south. According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the municipality had 248,972 inhabitants on 1 August 2026. It is the centre of Brainport, a high-tech and engineering region, with ASML based in neighbouring Veldhoven.
Utrecht is in the centre of the country. According to CBS, the municipality had 377,551 inhabitants on 1 August 2026. It has a historic centre with the Domtoren, a large university and the head office of Rabobank.
Cost of living
We do not publish rent or price tables for these two cities, because Statistics Netherlands and the government do not publish a comparable per-city rent figure for expats. Use current listings on rental platforms such as Kamernet and Housing Anywhere to compare, and the national rules that apply to both cities:
- In the regulated segment, the rent-point system applies. In 2026 the liberalisation limit is €1,228.07 per month (186 points).
- The maximum deposit for contracts from 1 July 2023 is two months of basic rent.
- The average basic health premium for 2026 is €157 per month, the same in both cities.

Jobs and work culture
Eindhoven is the centre of Brainport. ASML is based in Veldhoven, next to Eindhoven. Because the region is built around high-tech and engineering, many roles there are technical.
Utrecht has employers such as Rabobank (head office) and UMC Utrecht. The city also hosts a range of government and semi-public organisations.
Whether a role needs Dutch depends on the employer and the team; check the vacancy. If you move for work, the salary thresholds for highly skilled migrants are in our highly skilled migrant visa guide.

Public transport and connectivity
Utrecht Centraal is a central node of the Dutch railway network, so many routes between Dutch cities pass through it. Eindhoven Centraal is the main station in the south. We give no journey times here; use the NS journey planner for your own route.
For broader train and transport advice, see Dutch trains guide for expats 2026.
Schools and family life
International schools exist in both regions. Admission rules and waiting lists differ per school, so contact the schools directly and early. See moving to the Netherlands with kids and Dutch primary school for expats.
Lifestyle and culture
Eindhoven hosts Dutch Design Week every October and has the Van Abbemuseum. Strijp-S is the former Philips factory district, now redeveloped.
Utrecht has a historic centre with its canals and the Domtoren, the Centraal Museum and the TivoliVredenburg music venue. The Le Guess Who? festival takes place in the city.
Healthcare
Basic health insurance is mandatory in both cities and the rules are national. UMC Utrecht is a university hospital in Utrecht. We cover insurance in best Dutch health insurance plans 2026.
Who should choose which city
- Eindhoven fits if your employer is in or near Brainport, for example in Veldhoven.
- Utrecht fits if your work is in the central Netherlands or you travel a lot by train.
- Check the commute from your home to your workplace before you sign a lease. Cities in the Netherlands are connected by rail, but the travel time depends on the route.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is cheaper to live in: Eindhoven or Utrecht?
We do not give rent figures per city because we have no official source for them. Compare current listings in both cities yourself, and check the rental rules that apply everywhere in the Netherlands (the rent-point system and the €1,228.07 liberalisation limit for 2026).
Which city has more English-speaking jobs?
The two cities have different job markets. Eindhoven is the centre of Brainport, a high-tech and engineering region with ASML in nearby Veldhoven. Utrecht is home to the Rabobank head office and to the UMC Utrecht university hospital. Whether a role is English-speaking depends on the employer, so check the vacancy.
Is Utrecht better connected than Eindhoven?
Utrecht Centraal sits at the centre of the Dutch rail network, which is why most routes pass through it. Eindhoven Centraal is the main station of the south. Check journey times on the NS journey planner for your own route.
I work at ASML. Should I live in Eindhoven or Utrecht?
ASML is based in Veldhoven, next to Eindhoven. Living near your employer keeps the commute short, so most people in that position look in the Eindhoven area first. Check journey times on 9292 or the NS journey planner before deciding.
