N26 gives you a German (DE) IBAN, according to N26, and N26 Bank SE is on iDEAL’s list of issuers: N26 says any user whose IBAN starts with DE can pay with iDEAL | Wero where the merchant offers it. For a broader overview of banking options, see the best bank accounts for expats comparison.

The IBAN Situation Explained

N26 says an account opened in the Netherlands gets an official German (DE) IBAN. Wise’s EUR account details use a Belgian (BE) IBAN. Revolut has launched a Dutch branch and says that customers resident in the Netherlands will now have their accounts migrated to this branch and receive a Dutch IBAN (Revolut Help, checked 29 September 2026).

Legally there is no hierarchy: under the SEPA Regulation (EU 260/2012) a Dutch payer or payee must accept euro IBANs from all EU/EEA countries, not only Dutch ones, and De Nederlandsche Bank calls a refusal IBAN discrimination. What differs is the country code you get:

NL (Dutch): ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank and bunq, and Revolut for Netherlands residents. An NL IBAN avoids the discussion altogether.

BE (Belgian): Wise’s IBAN for EUR account details.

DE (German): N26’s IBAN; N26 says accounts opened in the Netherlands get an official German IBAN. If a Dutch employer or company refuses it, complain to them first and then report it to De Nederlandsche Bank.

Other SEPA IBANs: providers assigned outside a Dutch branch may issue another EU country code. Revolut has launched a Dutch branch and says that customers resident in the Netherlands will now have their accounts migrated to this branch and receive a Dutch IBAN (Revolut Help, checked 29 September 2026). Refusal based only on another EU country prefix can be unlawful IBAN discrimination, although product-specific payment limitations can still apply.

Where does this place N26? A DE IBAN is as valid for SEPA payments as a BE or NL IBAN; an NL IBAN mainly saves you the discussion. Read our Wise review for the comparison with Wise.

N26 Standard — The Free Account

N26 Standard is the no-fee, no-frills account. It does what a basic bank account does: you receive money, you spend money, you have a debit card.

What you get for free:

  • German DE IBAN for receiving payments
  • A physical debit card for EUR 10
  • Free virtual debit card
  • 2 free ATM withdrawals in euros a month
  • Instant payment notifications
  • In-app chat

What the free account does not include:

  • Travel insurance
  • Free foreign ATM withdrawals in non-eurozone countries
  • Spaces (sub-accounts) — these require Smart or above

Currency spending on the free plan: N26 says card payments in other currencies are free on all plans, and that ATM withdrawals outside the eurozone cost 1.7% on Standard and are free on Go and Metal (n26.com plan comparison, checked 29 September 2026). For transfers in other currencies, compare N26’s quote with Wise’s mid-market rate and stated fee.

N26 Smart — EUR 4.90 Per Month

At EUR 4.90/month, the additions are:

Spaces: up to 10 sub-accounts to separate money by purpose — rent, savings, holiday fund. N26’s plan comparison lists Spaces with their own IBAN and card pairing, and Shared Spaces.

Free physical debit card and budgeting automations, according to N26.

No change to the IBAN situation — you still have a DE IBAN. Paying more does not change this.

N26 Go — EUR 9.90 Per Month

N26 says Go includes travel insurance from Allianz Assistance, 1% cashback while travelling, free ATM withdrawals outside the eurozone and 5 free ATM withdrawals in euros a month. N26’s plan comparison lists travel and baggage delays up to €500, baggage cover up to €2,000 and emergency medical cover up to €1 million (dental up to €250); exclusions apply (n26.com plan comparison, checked 29 September 2026). It does not replace Dutch health insurance.

At EUR 9.90/month, N26 Go costs EUR 118.80 a year, including the account.

N26 Metal — EUR 16.90 Per Month

Metal is N26’s premium tier. The physical differentiator is a metal card that some people appreciate; for others it is irrelevant.

What Metal adds:

  • Metal card
  • 8 free ATM withdrawals in euros a month
  • Mobile phone insurance and purchase protection
  • First airport lounge visit each year free (then €30), and 1.5% annual interest on savings
  • A priority support line

Worth it for the Netherlands? At EUR 16.90/month (EUR 202.80/year), the Metal plan needs to provide genuine value beyond the bank account. The phone insurance and the priority support line are the most concrete additions to what Go offers. For most Dutch expats, the Go plan covers the main use case. Metal suits people who want the premium experience and use the phone insurance.

What N26 Does Well

Genuine Bank Regulation and Deposit Protection

N26 is supervised by BaFin (Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht), Germany’s financial supervisory authority, according to N26’s imprint. This matters.

Unlike Wise (which is not a bank but serves EU customers through Wise Europe SA, a payment institution authorised by the National Bank of Belgium, meaning deposits are safeguarded in segregated accounts but not covered by deposit guarantee schemes), N26 is a fully licensed bank. Your deposits with N26 are protected up to EUR 100,000 by the German statutory deposit guarantee. This is the same protection you get from ING or ABN AMRO in the Netherlands — a statutory deposit guarantee of up to EUR 100,000 per depositor under EU rules.

For expats holding significant amounts in a fintech account, this distinction between a regulated bank with deposit insurance and a payment institution with safeguarded accounts is worth understanding.

International Transfers

N26 allows international transfers (SWIFT payments to non-SEPA countries). Compare N26’s quote with Wise, which converts at the mid-market rate with a stated fee, before you send a larger amount.

Where N26 Falls Short for Dutch Expats

iDEAL | Wero: paying works, requesting money does not yet

iDEAL | Wero is the dominant online payment method in the Netherlands. N26 Bank SE is on the official list of iDEAL | Wero issuers, and N26 says any customer whose IBAN starts with DE can use it: you choose iDEAL | Wero at checkout, select N26 and confirm the payment in the N26 app. The same goes for paying a payment request from a friend, such as a Tikkie (ideal.nl issuer list, last updated 16 April 2026; N26 Support, “How to shop online with iDEAL | Wero”; both checked 24 September 2026).

The gap is on the other side. N26 states that sending payment requests is not yet supported. If you are the one who paid the dinner bill and wants to send a request to the group, you need another account that can do that.

Where the German IBAN still matters

If a Dutch employer, landlord or direct-debit collector asks for an NL IBAN, point them to the rules: under the SEPA Regulation they must accept a euro IBAN from any EU/EEA country (De Nederlandsche Bank). An NL IBAN simply avoids that discussion, which is why some expats keep a Dutch account next to N26.

Customer Service Weaknesses on Free Plan

On the free Standard plan, support runs through in-app chat; Go, Smart and Metal also have phone support, and Metal adds a priority line, according to N26. If something goes wrong (a payment is held, a card is blocked, an account is frozen for verification), you depend on that chat channel.

If Someone Refuses Your DE IBAN

A Dutch employer or company may not refuse your DE IBAN: under the SEPA Regulation, a payer or payee must accept euro IBANs from all EU/EEA countries (De Nederlandsche Bank). If one does, complain to them first and then report it to DNB.

The Right Use Case for N26 in the Netherlands

N26 works well as a secondary or supplementary account in the Netherlands. Specifically:

Travel account: N26 Go includes travel insurance, free card payments abroad and free ATM withdrawals outside the eurozone, according to N26. If you travel frequently from the Netherlands, this is the main case for having N26.

Budgeting tool: Spaces are well-implemented for people who like to separate money visually by category. If the Spaces feature appeals to you, N26 Smart is a clean way to do this.

Secondary fintech account: Some expats maintain both Wise and N26 for redundancy — if one app has a technical issue or temporarily freezes an account, having a second is practical.

What N26 is not suited for in the Netherlands:

  • Sending payment requests to friends (not yet supported in the N26 app)
  • Situations where you would rather avoid any discussion about a non-Dutch IBAN: an employer may not refuse it, but an NL IBAN avoids the discussion
  • International money transfer primary tool (compare N26’s quote with Wise’s mid-market rate and stated fee)

the editorial recommendation: For international transfers, Wise is the better fit: it converts at the mid-market rate with a stated fee and has no monthly fee. Both the Belgian (Wise) and the German (N26) IBAN must be accepted by Dutch payers under the SEPA Regulation (De Nederlandsche Bank).

N26 makes sense as a supplement if you value its German deposit insurance protection for larger balances, or if you travel frequently and want the Go plan’s travel insurance included in your banking costs.

You do not need both N26 and Wise — pick one fintech and pair it with a Dutch bank account (ING at €4.00/month, ABN AMRO at €4.30) if you need an NL IBAN or want to send payment requests.

N26 vs bunq: The Other Challenger Bank Comparison

Since bunq is Dutch and offers an NL IBAN, the N26 vs bunq comparison is worth a separate treatment.

FeatureN26bunq
IBANDE (German)NL (Dutch)

Spaces/sub-accountsYes (Smart+)Yes
Travel insuranceYes (Go and Metal)Yes (bunq Elite)
English appYesYes

The verdict: If you want a challenger bank with a Dutch NL IBAN, bunq is the more practical choice for the Netherlands than N26. And it need not cost anything: bunq Free is EUR 0.00 per month (with a digital card only), Core is EUR 3.99, Pro EUR 9.99 and Elite EUR 18.99 (checked 14 September 2026, bunq Help: What plans are available).

N26 makes more sense than bunq if you specifically value the German deposit insurance, the Go plan’s travel insurance, or you already have N26 from a previous country and want to continue using it. But for Dutch daily life, bunq’s NL IBAN advantage is real.

N26 Customer Service: The Honest Assessment

If N26 restricts your account for a compliance check or security review, you depend on support to lift it. If that happens when you need your money — a deposit, a first rent payment — it is a real inconvenience, so keep a second account for such moments.

Phone support is available on Go, Smart and Metal; Metal users also get a priority line, according to N26’s contact page.

Is N26 Regulated and Safe?

Yes, with the nuance already mentioned: N26 is a fully licensed German bank regulated by BaFin, Germany’s Federal Financial Supervisory Authority. This means:

  • Your deposits are protected by the German Deposit Guarantee Scheme up to EUR 100,000 per person
  • N26 must meet German and EU banking capital requirements
  • N26 is subject to German anti-money laundering regulations

This is a meaningful distinction from non-bank providers like Wise (which are regulated but not banks, and whose protection comes from safeguarding rather than deposit insurance). N26’s banking licence means you have the same legal deposit protection at N26 that you would have at Deutsche Bank or ABN AMRO — just under German rather than Dutch jurisdiction.

For the Netherlands specifically: complaints about N26 go to N26 first. For payment and banking services, N26’s imprint names the Schlichtungsstelle (arbitration board) at the Deutsche Bundesbank as the dispute resolution body; the BaFin arbitration board covers other services.

Opening an N26 Account

If you decide N26 suits your needs:

  1. Download the N26 app (iOS or Android)
  2. Enter your email and create a password
  3. Enter your details; N26 asks for a valid address in the Netherlands and a valid photo ID, and says a BSN is helpful but not required
  4. Verify your identity in the app
  5. Once your account is open, you get your German DE IBAN
  6. Order a physical card in the app if you want one (EUR 10 on Standard, included from Smart)

N26 onboarding and delivery depend on supported residence, identity verification and the current product terms.

Final Verdict

N26 is a licensed German bank with the German statutory deposit guarantee (up to EUR 100,000), Spaces sub-accounts and, on Go, travel insurance.

For the Netherlands specifically, N26 is a good secondary account. It handles iDEAL | Wero payments; the main gap for a primary account is that it cannot yet send payment requests. A Dutch payer may not refuse its German IBAN (De Nederlandsche Bank), but an NL IBAN avoids the discussion.

Pair it with a free Dutch bank account if you want N26’s features. Or use Wise for international transfers (mid-market rate with a stated fee) alongside a free Dutch account.

Frequently Asked Questions

What IBAN does N26 give you in the Netherlands?

N26 says an account opened in the Netherlands gets an official German (DE) IBAN. A Dutch employer, landlord or company may not refuse a euro IBAN from another EU/EEA country (De Nederlandsche Bank). For comparison: Wise’s EUR account details use a non-Dutch euro IBAN, and Revolut has launched a Dutch branch and says that customers resident in the Netherlands will now have their accounts migrated to this branch and receive a Dutch IBAN (Revolut Help, checked 29 September 2026).

Is N26 free to use?

N26 Standard (the basic account) is free with no monthly fee. You get a free virtual debit card; a physical card costs EUR 10. N26 Standard includes 2 free ATM withdrawals in euros a month and no travel insurance. Paid plans — Smart (EUR 4.90), Go (EUR 9.90) and Metal (EUR 16.90) — add features progressively (n26.com plan comparison, checked 29 September 2026).

Does N26 work as a primary bank account in the Netherlands?

It can be, with one gap. N26 says an account opened in the Netherlands gets a German (DE) IBAN, and a Dutch employer, landlord or direct-debit collector may not refuse a euro IBAN from another EU/EEA country (De Nederlandsche Bank). N26 supports iDEAL | Wero for paying webshops and payment requests: N26 Bank SE is on the official iDEAL | Wero issuer list. What it cannot do yet is send payment requests. As a secondary account for travel and budgeting N26 works well; as a sole account, check whether you need to send payment requests.

How does N26 compare to Revolut?

N26 and Revolut are both banks: N26 Bank SE is supervised by BaFin in Germany (N26 imprint), and Revolut Bank UAB is authorised by the Bank of Lithuania and the ECB (revolut.com). N26 says an account opened in the Netherlands gets a German IBAN; Revolut says customers resident in the Netherlands are migrated to its Dutch branch and receive a Dutch IBAN (Revolut Help, checked 29 September 2026). Both are on iDEAL’s list of issuers. Compare the plans, fees and features you need on each provider’s own pages.

Can I receive Dutch salary into N26?

Yes. A Dutch employer may not refuse to pay your salary into a euro IBAN from another EU/EEA country; De Nederlandsche Bank gives exactly that as an example of IBAN discrimination. If payroll says it only pays to NL IBANs, point HR to DNB’s rules and, if needed, report it to DNB.

What are N26’s plans and what do you get for each?

N26 Standard is free: a free virtual debit card (a physical card costs EUR 10) and 2 free ATM withdrawals in euros a month. N26 Smart at EUR 4.90/month adds a free physical debit card, up to 10 Spaces sub-accounts and budgeting automations. N26 Go at EUR 9.90/month adds travel insurance from Allianz Assistance, free ATM withdrawals outside the eurozone and 5 free withdrawals in euros a month. N26 Metal at EUR 16.90/month adds a metal debit card, mobile phone insurance and purchase protection, and 8 free withdrawals a month (n26.com plan comparison, checked 29 September 2026).

N26 Spaces in Detail: How the Sub-Account Feature Actually Works

N26’s Spaces (from the Smart plan) let you split your money into sub-accounts.

N26 lists up to 10 Spaces sub-accounts on Smart, budgeting automations to move money automatically, and — in its plan comparison — Spaces with their own IBAN and card pairing, plus Shared Spaces (n26.com plan comparison, checked 29 September 2026).

Versus bunq: both offer sub-accounts with their own IBAN: bunq’s Money Pockets (up to 25 on bunq Pro) and N26’s Spaces with IBAN and card pairing. Compare the number of sub-accounts and the plan you need.

ATM Access in the Netherlands with N26

You can withdraw cash at Dutch ATMs (geldautomaten) with your N26 card; the number of free withdrawals depends on your plan.

N26 and ATM withdrawal fees:

  • N26 Standard: 2 free ATM withdrawals in euros a month
  • N26 Smart: see N26’s plan page
  • N26 Go: 5 a month, plus free withdrawals outside the eurozone; N26 Metal: 8 a month (n26.com plan comparison, checked 29 September 2026)

Free withdrawals in euros per month: Standard 2, Go 5, Metal 8 (n26.com plan comparison, checked 29 September 2026).

Cash versus cards: if you rarely use cash, the ATM limits matter less.

N26 and Dutch Salary Payments: What the Rules Say

Any employer: under the SEPA Regulation a Dutch employer may not refuse to pay salary into a euro IBAN from another EU/EEA country; De Nederlandsche Bank gives exactly that as an example of IBAN discrimination. Confirm the account details with payroll and challenge a country-code restriction rather than accepting it.

Conclusion: N26’s DE IBAN is valid for salary. If you would rather avoid any discussion with payroll, a Dutch NL IBAN account (bunq, ING, ABN AMRO) next to N26 does that.

The Case for N26 Go as a Travel-Focused Expat

If you leave the Netherlands frequently — for business travel, regular trips home, or vacation — N26 Go at EUR 9.90/month makes a specific case that is worth thinking through carefully.

What the Go plan’s travel insurance covers: N26 says Go includes travel insurance from Allianz Assistance. The exact cover, limits and exclusions are in the policy terms; read them before you rely on the insurance for a trip.

The insurer: according to N26, the travel insurance on Go comes from Allianz Assistance.

Cost comparison: N26 Go costs EUR 9.90 a month, or EUR 118.80 a year, including the account. Compare that with the price of a standalone annual travel insurance policy for your own situation.

If you travel often, the Go plan can justify itself through the travel insurance; if you travel once or twice a year, compare it with a standalone policy.

How to Get the Most From N26 as a Secondary Account

The clearest use case for N26 in the Netherlands is as a secondary account alongside a primary Dutch account. Here is how to set that up to work well.

Your primary account (Dutch NL IBAN): ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank, or bunq. This handles your salary, direct debits, iDEAL payments, Tikkie, and everything that requires a Dutch account. Most of your daily spending goes through this account.

N26 (German DE IBAN): Used for travel. N26 says card payments abroad are free on all plans, and Go includes free ATM withdrawals outside the eurozone. If you have the Go plan, its travel insurance applies to your trips (exclusions apply).

Wise (Belgian BE IBAN): Used for international transfers — sending money to your home country, receiving foreign currency income. Wise converts at the mid-market rate with a stated fee.

This three-account setup covers the main use cases. The total cost: ING Go, formerly OranjePakket (EUR 4.00/month) + N26 Go (EUR 9.90/month) + Wise (free) = EUR 13.90/month, including travel insurance.

Comparing the Annual Cost: N26 vs Other Options

One more cost table to make the comparison concrete:

SetupMonthly costAnnual costKey gaps covered
ING basic onlyEUR 4.00EUR 48.00Dutch daily banking only
N26 Standard onlyEUR 0EUR 0iDEAL | Wero payments; no NL IBAN, no sending payment requests
N26 Go onlyEUR 9.90EUR 118.80iDEAL | Wero payments; no NL IBAN, no sending payment requests
Wise onlyEUR 0EUR 0No iDEAL (Wise is not an iDEAL issuer)
ING + WiseEUR 4.00EUR 48.00Dutch + international
ING + N26 Go + WiseEUR 13.90EUR 166.80Everything, including travel insurance
bunq Free + WiseEUR 0.00EUR 0.00Dutch + international (digital card only)
bunq Pro + WiseEUR 9.99EUR 119.88Dutch + international, up to 25 Money Pockets

The ING + N26 Go + Wise setup at EUR 166.80/year is the most expensive of these combinations. Whether that expense is justified depends primarily on how much you travel.

If you travel 3+ times per year, compare the Go plan’s travel insurance with the price of a standalone policy; N26 Go adds EUR 118.80 a year to your other accounts.

If you travel 0–2 times per year: Wise + ING covers most needs at EUR 48/year. You can buy standalone travel insurance for the specific trips you take.

More questions

Can I use Tikkie with N26?

Partly. Paying a Tikkie that someone sends you runs through iDEAL | Wero, and N26 supports iDEAL | Wero for paying payment requests from friends and family. N26 states that sending payment requests is not yet supported in its app, so if you regularly want to request money from others, keep a second account that supports this, such as a Dutch bank or bunq. Sources: ideal.nl issuer list and N26 Support, checked 24 September 2026.

Is N26 available in the Netherlands?

N26 is available to eligible residents of supported countries, including the Netherlands. The IBAN country and account entity depend on the current onboarding setup, so check the details offered to you rather than assuming every N26 account worldwide uses the same prefix. For deposit protection, read the scheme information for the legal entity shown in your contract.

What are N26's plans and what do you get for each?
